Does an avalanche airbag replace the need for a beacon, shovel, and probe?
Absolutely not. An airbag is designed to help prevent deep burial, but it is not foolproof. If you are caught and buried, or if you are the rescuer, a transceiver, probe, and shovel are still mandatory for companion rescue. Always carry the full trifecta.
Read answer →02Are electric fan-based airbags reliable in extreme cold?
Yes, modern fan-based systems from reputable brands are extensively tested to operate reliably in temperatures well below -20°C (-4°F). However, you must ensure the battery is fully charged and the pack is not stored in extreme cold for extended periods before a tour.

Yes, but with considerations. Fan-based (battery-powered) systems are generally accepted without issues. Cartridge-based systems require you to empty the cartridge before flying, and you must check airline-specific policies regarding compressed gas cylinders, which often require visual inspection.
Read answer →04How often should I practice deploying my airbag?
You should practice at least once at the start of every season, and ideally a few times throughout the winter. The goal is to make pulling the deployment handle an instinctive, muscle-memory action so you can do it instantly in a real emergency.
Read answer →05Does the airbag system take up a lot of room in the pack?
Yes, the airbag system and its housing typically occupy 3 to 5 liters of internal volume. This means a 30L airbag pack will have noticeably less usable storage space than a standard 30L backcountry pack. Consider sizing up if you are between volumes.
Read answer →06What happens if the airbag deploys accidentally?
Accidental deployments are rare but can happen if the handle is snagged. If it deploys in a safe area, simply deflate the bag, repack it according to the manufacturer's instructions, and replace/refill the cartridge or recharge the battery before continuing your tour.
