Can flat pedal shoes really grip as well as clipless pedals?

Modern sticky rubber compounds paired with quality flat pedals with metal pins can provide grip that approaches clipless security for most trail riding situations. The mechanical interlock between pins and rubber is remarkably effective. However, on extremely rough terrain, high-speed chatter, or unexpected compressions, feet can still separate from the pedals—something clipless prevents entirely. For most trail and enduro riding, the grip is sufficient; for pure efficiency on climbs and sprints, clipless retains an advantage.
