Why do flat pedal shoes use laces instead of BOA dials?

Laces remain the dominant closure system for flat pedal shoes for several reasons: they allow precise, multi-zone tension adjustment (tighter in the midfoot, looser in the forefoot), they're simple and reliable with no mechanical parts to break, they're easily replaceable, and they're less expensive. The frequent foot adjustments inherent to flat pedal riding benefit from the customizable fit that laces provide. Some newer models are incorporating BOA dials, but laces remain the preferred choice for most riders and manufacturers.
