Should beginners start with flat pedals or clipless?

Most mountain biking coaches and instructors recommend that beginners start with flat pedals. Flats teach proper weight distribution, bike-body separation, and foot positioning without the anxiety of being attached to the bike. Beginners can instantly dab a foot when losing balance, which builds confidence. Once fundamental skills are solid (typically after one to two seasons), riders can choose to switch to clipless or continue on flats—many skilled riders never switch. Starting on clipless can mask poor technique and create dependency on the clipless connection for control.
